Principal's Message

Dear Marina High School Families,

Now that we have had school for one full month, I am happy to report that we are well on our way to a great year. A clear indicator is the many activities across our school aimed at engaging our students and safe and engaging classroom cultures intentionally established by our teachers.

One of the indicators of student success is what happens in the classroom, but the other indicator is students actually being at school and joining these classroom opportunities. School attendance is vital for high school students because daily classroom presence directly drives getting credit for their courses, graduation rates, and future job success:
  • Credit Requirements: your student's credits are based on actual class time, meaning unexcused absences can lead to failing a class, not earning its credit.
  • Learning Gaps: Missing just 10% of the school year—about 18 days—creates large gaps in understanding complex high school subjects.
  • Better Grades: Students who show up every day consistently score higher on tests and maintain higher grade point averages.
  • Warning Sign: Chronic absence in upper grades serves as a leading indicator that a student is at risk of not finishing high school.
I am including our first month of attendance at a glance so that you can see some of the trends that we should celebrate and if needed, with your support, we can disrupt, such as the lower attendance of Fridays.

Let's continue our partnership and let's have a great week.
Go Mariners!

MPUSD Launches New Spanish-Language Facebook Community
MPUSD is excited to launch Comunidad de Familias MPUSD, a new Spanish-language Facebook group created specifically for our Spanish-speaking families and students. We will be promoting this page specifically for our Spanish-language families, but share this as information to the MPUSD community at large. The group provides another way for Spanish-language families to connect, stay informed, and engage with our school community. We’ll share important district updates, upcoming events, helpful resources, school highlights, and other information of interest to our families all in Spanish. Comunidad de Familias MPUSD is an additional way to stay connected with MPUSD and complements the important school and district communications families receive through ParentSquare.
