By now, all Marina High School families and scholars received a progress report highlighting their scholar's progress so far this semester. This practice is one of the many ways in which our teachers communicate and it is an invitation for you to talk to your scholar about their class performance and to connect with our teacher and/or school administration for any further communication and support. You may be tempted to dismiss a progress report because it doesn’t count on your scholar's final transcript, but progress reports can help you understand more than just grades.
In my experience, I have seen the benefits that progress reports offer as they cover the following three important aspects:
A grade drop in your scholar's class is a red flag.
If your scholar has always done well in math classes, for example, but their grade has dropped, it’s important to find out why. Our math curriculum is College Preparatory Math (CPM) which builds upon itself, so if your scholar is struggling with fundamental concepts, they will continue to fall behind. Are they completing their homework? Are they building good study habits? Identifying why your scholar's grade has slipped in math is critical to their future academic success.
Reading skills are also a critical foundational area. If your scholar struggles with reading or writing, they will be at a disadvantage in every single subject. They will struggle with word problems in math, they will have trouble with their science work, and they will miss key points in their history reading. Even if your scholar is reading at their current grade level, stronger reading and analytical skills will help to give them a competitive advantage.
Look for teacher feedback. It can help you understand your scholar's mindset.
Given all the time that your scholars spends at Marina High, our teachers may have insight into your scholar's behavior and mindset that you have not observed at home. Open communication with your scholar, as well as their teachers, is important to get a better understanding of their mindset.
Teacher comments on your scholar’s progress report can provide a deeper understanding of their social and emotional learning. Does your scholar get frustrated and give up on tough academic concepts? Do they have a hard time paying attention in class? Try not to think of this commentary as judgement, but rather as an opportunity to have a dialogue with your scholar. Getting ahead of negative patterns as early as possible, and helping to build a growth mindset in your child will go a long way toward their happiness and well-being.
Create an action plan.
If you’re not sure how to interpret your scholar’s progress report, or would like support in creating a plan for them, please reach out to our scholar's teachers. As a staff, we have started to create goals for each scholar and this is a great opportunity to identify areas of growth and develop a plan to help them achieve them.
Remember that the progress report is not a reflection of their final semester grade but an indication of how well they have done in their classes. You will receive another progress report in a little over a month so we have a good opportunity to make great progress.
Additionally, remember that we have our after school tutoring taking place in the College and Career Center Monday through Thursday for one hour after school where tutors are ready to support your scholar in the areas of need.

MPUSD Launches New Spanish-Language Facebook Community MPUSD is excited to launch Comunidad de Familias MPUSD, a new Spanish-language Facebook group created specifically for our Spanish-speaking families and students. We will be promoting this page specifically for our Spanish-language families, but share this as information to the MPUSD community at large. The group provides another way for Spanish-language families to connect, stay informed, and engage with our school community. We’ll share important district updates, upcoming events, helpful resources, school highlights, and other information of interest to our families all in Spanish. Comunidad de Familias MPUSD is an additional way to stay connected with MPUSD and complements the important school and district communications families receive through ParentSquare.

Free Food for MPUSD Families We are excited to share chef-prepared, take-home meals for MPUSD families. Visit one of four school sites on various days, including Central Coast High School, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, Ord Terrace Elementary, and Seaside High School.
