I know you were expecting (as you should) this communication yesterday morning but I was out of the country over the weekend and did not have immediate access to the internet. My apologies for the delay but sure enough, here is this week's edition of the Weekly Wave.
Let me start by saying that The Weekly Wave has served as a way of sharing information about our school, but this week it will serve as the vehicle to express my heartfelt gratitude for your support and enthusiasm in making last week's many events a success. We continue to make our community stronger with different events in which members of our community partner up with is to provide meaningful opportunities to connect and make our scholars' high school experience meaningful and memorable.
The energy in our school was palpable and our Mariners couldn't wait for the opportunity to showcase what they had been preparing to share with the community. What a week!
Let's start with our Homecoming Parade. It was wonderful to see our families and students gathered to cheer on our Mariners as we marched around our neighborhood. From our marching band to our different floats, what we shared was shared with plenty of spirit, care, and ongoing love for Marina High School:
Our scholars in the Leaders of Change class had the opportunity to mentor elementary students in Marina, connecting with them in a meaningful way. Our Mariners understand the importance of mentoring others and of being an active part in our community. See it for yourself:
Another example of community-in-the-making I wanted to share this week was the visit to Marina High School from our three candidates for Marina Mayor, Ms. Ana Luz Acevedo-Cabrera, Mr. Mike Moeller, and Ms. Liesbeth Visscher. Their visit had intention: they came to participate in a mayoral debate in front of our Senior Class. The questions were provided by our students and the debate itself was moderated by our Civics Teacher, Mr. Justin Collins. What was clearly evident is the level of engagement demonstrated by our scholars. They were present and respectful, and learned about the perspectives and ideas from three members of our community who want to make things better in Marina:
And how about our Marina Mariachi celebrating with our future Mariners at JC Crumpton Elementary? Our mariachi went to share their love of music and culture through their performance:
As the Principal at Marina High School, I am definitely proud of is the fact that our Mariners continue to actively be part of our school community and of our community at large by practicing a culture of belonging, a culture of service, and by actively participating in our democratic process with intelligence and a deeper understanding of it.
These types of experiences continue to make our school the special place it is for our kids, for our families, and for our community.
Let's continue our partnership and let's have a great week. Go Mariners! José A Quevedo jquevedo@mpusd.k12.ca.us Office: (831) 583-2060 ext. 3789 Cell: (831) 353-145
