7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Grade Families:
We want to make you aware that California state law, the California Healthy Youth Act, (CHYA), requires that comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school or junior high school and once in high school, starting in grade 7. Due to COVID-19, we have incorporated CHYA instruction for the 2020-21 school year for 7th, 8th and 10th grade students. Students in 9th grade will also receive instruction (Health Smart curriculum from ETR publication) as part of their Freshman Seminar Health and Wellness course.
Instruction will rotate throughout the year, but we want to ensure that parents/guardians understand have an opportunity to view the instructional materials and opt out of the instruction in writing to their school principal.
For students in 7th and 8th grade, the curriculum will be provided by our Board adopted district partner, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, beginning and not before Monday, November 9. For 10th graders, the curriculum will be provided in March 2021 also by Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. Instruction will be conducted as a combination of asynchronous online and synchronous live online sessions. Depending on the grade level, instruction is between 8-10 sessions total.
Family preview nights 7th, 8th, and 10th grade families were conducted on October 14th in both English and Spanish. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte rules prevented their recording but materials previews are available. Due to digital licensing issues, families can preview the materials through Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. Please contact Miranda Monica, health educator at Planned Parenthood at [email protected].
For 9th grade students, a family preview night was held on October 21st. You may preview the materials through the Health Smart links below. If families desire a K-12 comprehensive look at the curriculum, parents can access a 30-day free trial on the Health Smart publisher website (ETR homepage) and request it.
