MPUSD Student Board Member & Marina High School Senior
During the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District's February 14, 2023 Board of Education Meeting, Sophia Bennett was sworn in as the first student board member to serve our school district.
Bennett is a senior at Marina High School and says she wants to serve on the board to allow students to have a voice in decisions made by the board of education and district leaders.
"Something I look forward to in being part of the board as a student board member is to give the opportunity for students to have a voice and allow for a student perspective in having input on what goes on in our district community," said Bennett.
According to the board of education bylaws, student board members are allowed to cast votes on all open session agenda items as a way to show their formal opinion on the matter. That opinion will be recorded in the meeting minutes and happens before the board of education formally votes.
Bennett's term will run through the end of the 2022-2023 school year.
