Celebrating Our School Librarians and Library Media Specialists
Each April 4th, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District recognizes National School Librarian Day, celebrating the invaluable contributions of the professionals who bring knowledge to life in our schools. More than just keepers of books, our school librarians and library media specialists are at the heart of student learning—helping students navigate a world filled with information, fostering a love of reading, and providing essential digital resources.
Across our elementary, middle, and high schools, librarians or makerspaces create spaces where students can explore ideas, research new topics, and develop a lifelong passion for learning. At the middle and high school levels, many of our librarians serve as library media specialists, ensuring students have access not only to books but also to a wealth of online databases, research tools, technology, and multimedia resources that enhance their education. These specialists help students develop critical thinking skills, evaluate sources, and become responsible digital citizens in an era of ever-evolving technology.
Beyond the bookshelves, our school librarians collaborate with teachers to integrate literature, media literacy, and research skills into the curriculum. They curate resources that support classroom learning, assist students in finding materials that match their interests, and create welcoming library environments where curiosity thrives. Their dedication extends beyond the school day, as they organize reading initiatives, book fairs, and technology workshops that engage students, staff, and families alike.
On this National School Librarian Day, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District thanks its school librarians and library media specialists for their commitment to education and for providing students with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. Their work is an impressive accomplishment that impacts students every day of the year.
Join us in celebrating them today—and every day!
