Course Description:

This course is designed for students seeking the rigor of a college level music course while still within the high school setting, completing the AP Music Theory exam.  The AP Music Theory course will enable students to learn the rules of music composition and develop listening skills through sight singing and dictation.  The AP Music Theory test has four parts: A multiple choice section, sight singing, dictation, and composition.  This course runs two semesters and, due to scheduling restrictions, AP Music Theory students may be placed in with the choir class.

This course is designed as an experience in learning proper instrument playing techniques, proper use of the instrument and the reading and interpretation of both classical and modern music through practice, and performance on a keyboard instrument.  The student should develop the ability to continue to the next higher level with the purpose of either playing for enjoyment or continuing in music as a profession.

Course Description:

This course is about the study of Digital Photography. In this class we will learn about camera functions, image creation and manipulation. You will examine various photographers styles and views and how to apply the elements and principles of art and design. In this process you will experience different approaches to image creation and start to explore personal style.

Course Description:

In this course scholars will embark on a journey of self discovery, community improvement and self empowerment. Scholars will critically think about their core values, learn about various leadership styles, and learn what it means to be a good leader in their own lives, community and the world. Scholars will develop community improvement projects and present them to the class. Scholars will collectively choose the most promising community projects from the class and then pitch them to the Marina City Council for consideration. Finally, scholars will tackle a global challenge and research what is being done to solve the issue. Students will then make recommendations and create an action plan for how they can become involved to create positive change in the world around them.

Leaders of Change
Course Description:

Student Leaders of Change is a dynamic student-centered course that provides students opportunities to blend leadership skills with advocacy to address local issues concerning race, gender, and class. A lens of social justice will pervade the course as students will participate in this liberatory class in which students have multiple types of leadership opportunities with the teacher serving as a guide and advocate. Each unit will be project-based in that content will be learned through inquiry with students able to research content individually and/or collaboratively. The class centers on using knowledge about power, systems, and structures of race, gender, and class to address local issues, including participation in school awareness campaigns, working with teachers on curricula, and participating in community organizations.
